With campuses in Berkeley and San Jose, Shu Ren International Schools are IB World Schools that inspire a love of learning through an inquiry-based, Mandarin immersion program that prepares students ages 2-12 with the heart and mind to thrive in an evolving global society. Inquiry Based Education
Shu Ren is proud to be one of very few schools in the U.S that combines the rigor of the International Baccalaureate program with a Mandarin immersion language program. Our programs reflect the diversity, opportunity, and strong sense of community found in the Bay Area. Our students are not just high academic achievers, they are active participants in a complex and rich world of international culture and communication; they do not simply copy words, sentences, or memorize passages from books; they ask important questions, perform research, and present their findings in Chinese, English and Spanish. Finally, a Shu Ren International Student is treasured for who they are and is nurtured by teachers who work to help students reach their full potential as a student, an individual, and a citizen of the world.
Our Programs
At Shu Ren International schools, our goal is for students to become life long learners who are motivated to seek answers to probing questions on their own beyond our schoolwide learner outcomes guide. Our approach to learning and life at Shu Ren and our curriculum lay the groundwork for students to excel at all levels. Standardized tests like the MAP and STAMP Assessments show that Shu Ren students outperform the national average at all elementary grade levels.
Summer Camp
Shu Ren's Mandarin Immersion summer camps are carefully designed for all levels of Mandarin language learners in a fun and engaging environment. We offer themed sessions for several age groups.
Benefits of Bilingual Education
As Mandarin Chinese is a critical, non-romance language and a growing form of global communication, it is essential to provide a strong framework for teaching each component of the language and the related culture. As with any language it is important to utilize the best resources, practices, and individuals to create the most successful environment for a child to become bilingual.
In addition to facilitating cross-cultural communication, speaking more than one language also positively affects cognitive abilities. Researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain, thanks to its developed ability to inhibit one language while using another. Learning in English and target language every day deepens and strengthens a student's language, math, and science skills.
